The Natural Alignment of Your Neck
If your spine is out of alignment, your body expends more energy to just keep you upright and balanced. Your pain may therefore be a warning sign that your spine is out of alignment and this may have serious consequences for your overall vitality and health.
Your head should be in a neutral position directly on top of your shoulders, allowing your ears to directly lineup with the middle of your shoulders. Any variation from this ‘norm’ may cause problems. This image shows how your spinal nerves, vertebrae and discs sit together in your neck.
Common Causes of Neck Pain
So, what may cause neck pain? There are many causes, some more obvious than others.
Neck pain may be caused by:
- Poor posture
- Forward head posture
- Bad office ergonomics (low computer screen, hunched posture, ‘tech neck’)
- Sport injury
- Car accidents
- Neck ‘cracking’
- Muscle tightness
- Poor sleeping habits
- Sudden movement or turning (which may indicate an underlying structural problem)
Neck pain ranked 4th highest in terms of disability (as measured by years lived with disability), indicating it is a common condition that causes substantial disability1.
Chiropractic Adjustments for Neck Pain
As part of a literature review (Vernon et al.) conducted by the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (published March/April 2007) the researchers reviewed nine previously published trials and found:
‘High-quality evidence’ that patients with chronic neck pain showed significant pain-level improvements following spinal manipulation/adjustments.
No trial group was reported as having remained unchanged, and all groups showed positive changes up to 12 weeks post-treatment.
Can chiropractic adjustment help with neck pain?
In some cases, yes.
A chiropractic adjustment is a precise procedure applied to the joints, usually by hand. An adjustment works to improve mobility of the spine and to restore normal range of motion and increase muscle movement. A series of adjustments can help mobilise the spine, allowing for improved ability to twist/turn more naturally and a reduction in pain, stiffness and soreness.
