What is Sciatica?

  • sensory dysfunction

If you think you experience any form of nerve pain, this page may help you understand possible causes and treatment options for sciatica.

What is the Sciatic Nerve?

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It starts with individual nerve roots that branch out from the lower spine, eventually forming the sciatic nerve.

You can see in the diagram that the sciatic nerve originates in the lower back, runs under the Piriformis muscle and eventually down into the leg.

Our team will work with you to address the cause of your nerve irritation and provide appropriate recommendations for care.

Common Causes of Sciatica

Common causes of sciatica may include:

  • irritation of the nerve root in the lower spine
  • disc degeneration
  • disc herniation or injury
  • poor posture or prolonged periods of sitting over long times (office workers are susceptible)
  • pregnancy

How Do I Correct Sciatica?

Sciatica treatment options can vary patient to patient. It depends on how long your have had symptoms. Some patients find relief almost immediately, others take longer. Common treatment options include:

  • a series of chiropractic adjustments to take pressure of the nerve and correct spinal misalignments
  • physical therapy and specific exercises
  • heat/Ice therapy
  • pain management
  • as a last resort, some sufferers undergo back surgery
  • a Spinal Screening may identify any underlying structural or posture issues contributing to sciatica.
